The Clare PPN is calling for nominations for the following position:
Clare PPN representative on the Clare Local Sports Partnership Board
This representative role is open to Clare PPN members from the Community and Voluntary pillar.
The Clare Local Sports Partnership (CLSP) was established in 2001 by the Irish Sports Council (ISC), now known as Sport Ireland (SI) as part of the Local Sports Partnership Initiative ‘A New Era for Sport’. This approach was the first national physical activity participation strategy funded through a dedicated state agency. CLSP works with key stakeholders nationally and within the county, to target audiences and deliver specified activities and projects. The key target markets which have been the focus of development over the previous number of years include:
- Women in Sport
- Older Adults
- People with Disabilities
- School Children
- Unemployed People
- Disadvantaged Youths
- Immigrant Communities
CLSP is governed by a board of directors and representative of key agencies throughout the county including Clare Public Participation Network. Representatives also individually sit on sub-committees with reporting functions to the board.

How to nominate a candidate
Nominations are open from Monday 19th November to Friday 23rd November at 5pm– no late nominations will be accepted.
Groups wishing to nominate a candidate must seek their consent first and then must send us an email to admin@clareppn.ie with the following information:
- Name of Community Group (must be a Clare PPN Community & Voluntary member)
- Name of proposed nominee.
- Contact details of proposed nominee.
- A short paragraph (up to 200 words) detailing the nominees’ suitability and experience for the role- this will be shared on social media and on our website in advance of voting.
- A photo of your nominee which we may share with our members and social media followers.
What happens then?
- Clare PPN will confirm receipt of nominations by email.
- Following the close of nominations, Clare PPN will circulate details of candidates to our members and online and voting will be open until Friday 30th November at 5pm.
- NB: Even if you have nominated a candidate you will still need to cast your vote to support their election.

The European Pillar for Social Rights

“European Anti-Poverty Network Ireland calls for the Government to honor its commitment to reducing poverty by implementing in full the European Pillar of Social Rights.”
As we approach the first anniversary of the signing of the European Pillar of Social Rights, EAPN Ireland is calling on the Irish government to ensure that Ireland actively honours the 20 rights and principles within the Pillar. On November 17th 2017 the European Pillar of Social Rights was proclaimed by Council of the EU, the European Parliament, and the Commission, and signed off by heads of EU member states. The Pillar outlines rights and principles that can guide Europe towards a future of greater social inclusion and
equality, and support access to employment and social rights. The Pillar covers areas linked to access to quality jobs, equality, access to adequate income, and access to quality services in areas such as health, housing, and care. EAPN Ireland previously welcomed the Irish Government’s support for the European Pillar of Social Rights however now warns against any piece-meal approach to the implementation of the Pillar and to the rights and principles which underpin it.
Paul Ginnell, Director of EAPN Ireland states “It is not enough for the Irish Government simply to sign up to the European Pillar of Social Rights or to pay lip service to its principles. It must take direct and meaningful action to honour the Pillar and ensure that the Pillar informs all policy that directly impacts on the most marginalised in society”. He added: “The Pillar recognises the important role that civil society can play and anti-poverty and equality organisations, such as EAPN Ireland, are keen to play our role in informing and supporting its
delivery”. “
EAPN Ireland is also calling for the European Commission to take on a strong role in monitoring and supporting the implementation of the Pillar across EU member states.

Clare Public Participation Network is delighted that two excellent candidates have been nominated as to sit on Clare’s Joint Policing Committee. Unfortunately there is only one seat allocated to the PPN so we have to get you to vote for the nominee of your choice. Voting is open until 5pm on Monday 19th November and all member groups are eligible to cast one vote in this election.

‘My name is Ladigbolu Abiodun, I am the President of the Association for the Nigerian Community in Clare. I have been in the position for the past 3 years and worked my way right from the position of the PRO up. I have vast of experience and training in community activities and organisations. I am the current president of egbe omo Yoruba in Clare. I have been representing my association at the quarterly meetings of the garda and the community groups since year 2009. It would be an honour to give more to the community as their representative on the JPC.
Over the last 25 years, Madeline McAleer has worked with, provided training sessions and completed funding applications for a number of community groups in Clare e.g. Clare Haven Services, Clare Family Resource Centre, Disabled People of Clare, Irish Refugee Council / Clare Immigrant Support Centre, Ennis Community Development Project and Haven Horizons.
Madeline was the co-founder of the Clare Family Resource Centre, the first community childcare centre in Clare. Madeline completed the successful application for capital funding for the purpose built community crèche.
When working as the project development officer with Clare Haven Services, refuge accommodation and comprehensive outreach services for victims of domestic abuse in Co. Clare were established. Working in Clare Haven Services involved building positive interagency relationships and working closely with An Garda Síochána.
Madeline is currently the Research and Development Director of Haven Horizons. Haven Horizons focuses on domestic abuse prevention; providing awareness sessions and education / training modules and promoting international models of best practice which change public attitudes and professional responses to domestic abuse.
Haven Horizons is currently working with local and national Gardaí to establish Co. Clare as the Demonstration Division for the St. Paul ‘Blueprint for Safety’ model of domestic abuse prevention, which involves greater collaboration between police, prosecution services, court services, advocacy groups, prison and probation services to close the gaps in the criminal justice system.

Letter from Clare PPN to Councillors regarding lack of services for those in emergency accommodation in Clare.
Mary O’Donoghue is one of Clare PPN’s social inclusion representatives on Clare’s Local Community Development Committee (LCDC). At the LCDC meeting of October 10th she raised the issue of the lack of available services for people in emergency accommodation in Clare. She has followed this up by sending the letter below to all Councillors on our behalf.
October 25th 2018
Dear Councillor,
It has been brought to the attention of the staff and representatives of Clare PPN on several occasions recently that there are no services available in County Clare for those who are in emergency accommodation in hotel rooms and bed and breakfasts. Clare PPN is aware and supportive of plans to open a family hub in Ennis but understands that the earliest this development is likely to be available is February 2019.
Clare PPN would like to draw it to the attention of the LCDC and all Councillors in Clare that there is an urgent and immediate need for the provision of a hot nutritious meal on a daily basis for the adults and children living in hotels and bed and breakfasts in an accessible venue or delivered to them in their accommodation. There is also a need for a laundry and clothes drying service to be made available for them.
Clare PPN believes that families should not have to be in B&B or hotel accommodation on any long term basis but is calling on the Council and the LCDC to ensure that it does all it can to ensure that whilst this situation continues the provision of laundry and hot meals should be looked at as a basic minimum necessity for the well-being of those in this situation and provided for as soon as possible.
Please may I take this opportunity to ask you to do all you can to ensure that such services are put in place and that Clare County Council take responsibility for making it happen.

Clare Volunteer Centre, Clare Public Participation Network and Clare Local Development Company invite members of the public to join them at one of five free networking and community knowledge events they are hosting around the county this November. Each event will include three short workshops on the topics of understanding conflict, recruiting volunteers, and making funding applications. These friendly, free events will also give those attending a chance to learn about the host organisations and what they have to offer community groups. After the workshops there will be a light lunch and a chance to network and meet the other attendees. Sarah Clancy of Clare Public Participation Network said ‘In a rural county like Clare it is really important that our community organisations and groups know how to collaborate and work effectively together. We hope these events will make that process a bit easier and be supportive and enjoyable to those involved in making their communities better places to live’.
Workshops at each event are as follows:
Strengthening your volunteer programme – how to recruit the right volunteer
Do you need to recruit more volunteers for your organization ? How do you find the right volunteer? This short workshop goes through the basics that any organization needs to know. This session will be delivered by Sharon Meaney, Clare Volunteer Centre Manager.
Fundraising and funding applications for community groups
Does your community group need support with how and where to apply for funding? This short practical workshop will look at some of the different funding opportunities available to community groups. This session will be delivered by Monica McKenna, Community Development Officer from Clare Local Development Company.
Understanding conflict – an introduction
This session will introduce participants to some of the underlying dynamics involved in interpersonal conflict with a view to helping people work positively together. This session will be delivered by Sarah Clancy of Clare Public Participation Network who is a trained mediator.
The Network November events are open to all those interested though advance booking is essential.
