Healthy Clare receives €374,100 in Healthy Ireland Funding

Healthy Clare receives €374,100 in Healthy Ireland Funding

The Healthy Clare Strategic Plan 2019-2021 was launched in March 2019 and has secured funding of €374,100.

The open call for projects took place from July to August 2019 and generated great interest. Projects were selected and funding is being awarded through the Clare Local Community Development Committee (LCDC) which is a sub-committee of Clare County Council and made up of public and private sector representation.

Pat Dowling, Chief Executive of Clare County Council complimented the Department of Health for its vision in providing funding to local community and voluntary organisations in order to improve the health and wellbeing of the people of the County. He said that raising awareness within communities of the importance of looking after your health and wellbeing is the ideal place to ground the Healthy Ireland agenda and this funding supports that.

The Clare Local Community Development Committee is responsible for managing the fund which has also been welcomed by Andrew Dundas, Chairperson of the committee. He outlined how the Local Community Development Committee and the Clare Children and Young People’s Services Committee agreed to submit the joint funding application which is a welcome boost to the County and supports the implementation of the strategy objectives.

Karen Fennessy, Healthy Clare Co-ordinator with Clare County Council explained that the funding relates to three strands which include ‘Healthy Ireland’, ‘Community Mental Health’ and ‘Small Grants funding for Mental Health’.  This funding will benefit many worthwhile projects being undertaken by the Community and Voluntary sector throughout Clare and it is wonderful to see the emergence of fantastic initiatives that aim to support the implementation of the strategy and the ethos of a Healthy Clare.

Some of the projects being funded relate to:-

  • Building healthy minds, reaching many of the target groups county-wide
  • Prevention and recovery projects engaging people who are in recovery and those at risk of drug & alcohol related harm
  • Fitness and wellbeing for all through the lifespan
  • Athletics for children with disabilities
  • Social Health Education Programmes for Mental Well-being (empowering people to help themselves)

The Clare Local Community Development Committee (LCDC) has published findings of a new survey of more than 1,000 adults across Clare focusing on the county’s health, well-being and quality of life.

The Clare Survey, a strategic action of the Local Economic and Community Plan, will be used by Clare County Council to strengthen national funding applications such as the Rural and Urban Regeneration Funds and to direct resources to those areas of the county most in need.  The survey will also be utilised as a benchmark to measure progress for strategies such as Local Economic and Community Plan and the Healthy Clare Strategy.  Clare County Council says the localised information contained in the survey results will complement data available under the Census and the Survey of Income and Living Conditions.

The survey, which was conducted by independent market research agency Behaviour and Attitudes Ltd. in late 2018, explored topics such as Education, Employment Status, Health & Well-being, Attitudes to Mental Health, Social Engagement, Technology and Transport.

The Local Community Development Committee (LCDC) is a subcommittee of Clare County Council and includes representatives from Clare Public Participation Network, local state agencies, the community voluntary sector as well as other local development and interest groups. The LCDC has prepared and oversees the implementation of the community elements of the Local Economic and Community Development Plan (LECP) which is a 6 year strategy for the county. The committee also developed the Healthy Clare Strategy and manages the Social Inclusion and Community Activation Programme (SICAP) for Clare.  In addition funding programmes such as the Healthy Ireland Fund and the Community Enhancement Programme are overseen by the LCDC committee.

Letter from Clare PPN to Councillors regarding lack of services for those in Emergency Accommodation

Letter from Clare PPN to Councillors regarding lack of services for those in emergency accommodation in Clare.

Mary O’Donoghue is one of Clare PPN’s social inclusion representatives on Clare’s Local Community Development Committee (LCDC). At the LCDC meeting of October 10th she raised the issue of the lack of available services for people in emergency accommodation in Clare. She has followed this up by sending the letter below to all Councillors on our behalf.

October 25th 2018

Dear Councillor,

It has been brought to the attention of the staff and representatives of Clare PPN on several occasions recently that there are no services available in County Clare for those who are in emergency accommodation in hotel rooms and bed and breakfasts. Clare PPN is aware and supportive of plans to open a family hub in Ennis but understands that the earliest this development is likely to be available is February 2019.

Clare PPN would like to draw it to the attention of the LCDC and all Councillors in Clare that there is an urgent and immediate need for the provision of a hot nutritious meal on a daily basis for the adults and children living in hotels and bed and breakfasts in an accessible venue or delivered to them in their accommodation. There is also a need for a laundry and clothes drying service to be made available for them.

Clare PPN believes that families should not have to be in B&B or hotel accommodation on any long term basis but is calling on the Council and the LCDC to ensure that it does all it can to ensure that whilst this situation continues the provision of laundry and hot meals should be looked at as a basic minimum necessity for the well-being of those in this situation and provided for as soon as possible.

Please may I take this opportunity to ask you to do all you can to ensure that such services are put in place and that Clare County Council take responsibility for making it happen.

Many thanks,

Mary O’Donoghue
